How has Homegrown helped you with your basketball journey?

Homegrown Basketball Australia has set a well-founded foundation and stepping stone within my basketball career. It’s established and expanded upon aspects within my game that needed refinement and improvement. The program has educated and illustrated the ins and outs of basketball in the Philippines, whether that be from its fast-paced style of play or to its high physicality. Homegrown has pushed my game to places I could never imagine, like playing in the Philippines. The program has strengthened not only my abilities on the court but also off the court, it has taught me mental strength and understanding when experiencing certain things. I have always saw basketball as more than a sport and I feel like Homegrown has always been able to capitalise on that.

How do you handle pressure during crucial moments in a game?

Always put your trust in your coach because they’re the ones that have the most transparency towards the game. They know what’s going to happen and can make predictions based of what they have observed throughout the game. Trust your teammates, it’s not easy pressuring yourself to do everything and at the end of the day basketball is a team sport. Continue to stay united and get through it together, that’s what makes a championship team. I always remember how much I love this sport and the amount of work that I put in, that’s what keeps me confident and not nervous. Most importantly, put your trust in God, God wouldn’t put you in a situation that you can’t handle. Stay calm and composed during those crucial moments because God got you.

How do you keep your fitness and skill levels up during the off-season?

Continuing to stay consistent and disciplined throughout the off-season allows me to keep my fitness and skill levels up to standard. Even on days where I feel unmotivated to train I just remember my love for basketball and who I’m doing it for, it always continues to keep me motivated. Being around a good circle of friends is important because at the end of the day you’re a product of your own environment, the people you hang around is very central and driven to the person you are yourself. The friends I’m around continue to push me and motivate me to stay consistent and train each and everyday, they allow me to stay disciplined towards my fitness and skill levels as we always are willing to train with one another. Being around a certain crowd will implement a mindset and drive towards yourself, being around my friends, allows me to keep my fitness and skill levels up to standard during the off-season.
